What is the Genie Lamp meme?
Genie Lamp is a two-panel template from Disney's Aladdin. In the top panel the Genie swells to enormous size against a starry sky, glowing red and grinning as he shows off what he can do. In the bottom panel he is a tiny blue face squashed inside the window of his golden lamp, cupped in Aladdin's hands, looking miserable. The pairing comes from his famous line "phenomenal cosmic powers... itty bitty living space," so the meme is about anything that is enormously capable but stuck in a ridiculous, cramped or underwhelming situation.
Origin: The scene is from Disney's 1992 animated film Aladdin, where Robin Williams voices the Genie. He uses the line to explain the downside of being a genie: unlimited magic, but bound to a lamp.
Also known as: Phenomenal Cosmic Power, Itty Bitty Living Space, Aladdin Genie.
How to use the Genie Lamp meme
The top box goes over the huge glowing Genie and should name the impressive part: raw power, high specs, big ambitions. The bottom box sits over the lamp and names the tiny container that power is forced into.
It is a natural fit for tech jokes (a powerful GPU in a laptop with no cooling, a huge model on a phone), for housing (a great salary and a studio the size of a closet), and for people whose talents are wasted in a dull job. You can quote the film directly with the classic captions or swap in your own pair, as long as the first is big and the second is small and sad.
