What is the Always Has Been meme?
Two astronauts float in space looking at Earth. The first, facing the planet, has just realised something about it; the second stands behind him, pistol raised at his back, and answers "always has been." This version shows the Ohio flag on the second astronaut's arm and the planet tinted to look like Ohio, a nod to the long-running joke that everything is secretly Ohio. The format reveals that something you just noticed was true the whole time, with the gun adding a darkly comic hint that the truth was never meant to be discovered.
Origin: The two-astronaut format grew out of a 2016 MS Paint drawing posted on Reddit about the flat Earth. The "wait, it's all X? always has been" phrasing took off around 2020, and the Ohio variant came later with the "Ohio vs. the world" joke.
Also known as: Wait, It's All Ohio, Wait It's All, Astronaut Meme.
How to use the Always Has Been meme
There are four boxes. The first, beside the astronaut looking at Earth, is his realisation, written as "Wait, it's all X?" or "Wait, it's X?". The second, top right near the gunman, is the reply, nearly always "Always has been". The third labels the first astronaut at the bottom and the fourth labels the second astronaut, so you can show who is learning and who is guarding the secret. The labels are optional; leave them empty if the dialogue says enough.
It works for discovering that a product was always the same thing rebranded, that every app is now a shopping app, or that a game is just a spreadsheet.
