What is the Afraid to Ask Andy meme?
Afraid to Ask Andy features Andy Dwyer, the cheerful, scatterbrained shoeshine guy turned office assistant played by Chris Pratt in Parks and Recreation, mid-sentence with an earnest, slightly lost expression. The caption is a confession: some piece of common knowledge or current events you never understood, plus Andy's sheepish admission that it's now too late to ask. It captures the moment when you've nodded along for too long to admit you're lost, from crypto and offside rules to what your coworker actually does all day.
Origin: The line comes from Parks and Recreation, the NBC sitcom about the parks department of the fictional town Pawnee, Indiana. Andy says it in a sixth-season episode while admitting he doesn't understand something he should.
Also known as: And At This Point I'm Too Afraid to Ask, Andy Dwyer Meme.
How to use the Afraid to Ask Andy meme
Put the thing you don't understand in the top box, written as "I don't know what X is" or "I still don't get X". The bottom box finishes with Andy's sign-off about being too afraid to ask at this point, or a close variant.
The humor depends on the topic being something everyone else seems to understand: a hit show, a slang term, a sport's rules, a tool your whole team uses. Topics people have talked about for years work best, because the embarrassment of asking grows with time. Keep the top line short and specific.
