What is the Gentleman Frog meme?
Gentleman Frog is a painting of a large toad dressed as a 19th-century gentleman, sitting upright in a wooden chair with a black frock coat, a patterned waistcoat with a watch fob and a white cravat, his amphibian hands resting on his knees. His heavy-lidded, unimpressed stare gives him the air of a dignified critic. Captions make him a pompous connoisseur, most often in the "ah yes, [thing]" format, appraising something completely ordinary or ridiculous with refined seriousness.
Origin: The painting, sold as a print called "Colonel Toad" on Etsy from 2011, reworks an older portrait. It became a popular image macro on Reddit and Twitter.
Also known as: Colonel Toad, Sir Toad, Frog in Suit, Ah Yes Frog.
How to use the Gentleman Frog meme
Top box: "ah yes" or a formal opener like "gentlemen". Bottom box: the thing he is appraising, described in a slightly redundant or overly literal way ("floor, the ground", "a well-formatted commit").
It works for stating the obvious with fake sophistication, mock-formal announcements, and appreciating tiny victories. The humor is the gap between his aristocratic manner and the dull subject. Fancy vocabulary in the bottom line pushes it further.
