What is the Gentlemen, It Is With Great Pleasure... meme?
Gentlemen, It Is With Great Pleasure... uses Colonel Toad, a painting of a toad dressed as a 19th-century gentleman: dark frock coat, striped waistcoat, white cravat, sitting in a chair with his chin raised and a calm, slightly smug expression. In this format he is giving a grand announcement in the style of "Gentlemen, it is with great pleasure to inform you that...". The joke is the formal, dignified delivery of trivial or dumb news, as if a tiny victory were being reported to a board of distinguished members.
Origin: The toad painting was sold as a print called "Colonel Toad" on Etsy around 2011, and it was based on an older 19th-century portrait. The "gentlemen, it is with great pleasure" announcement is a later meme format that the image is often paired with.
Also known as: Colonel Toad, Sir Toad, Frog in Suit, Gentlemen Frog, Gentlemen It Is With Great Pleasure.
How to use the Gentlemen, It Is With Great Pleasure... meme
There is a single text box. Write the announcement, either the whole sentence ("gentlemen, it is with great pleasure to inform you that...") or just the news itself, with the toad's pose doing the rest.
Tiny wins announced with enormous ceremony land best: the build is green, the printer works, the group chat finally picked a restaurant, the team won a game. Bad news delivered in the same grand tone ("it is with great pleasure to inform you the server is down") also works, as ironic deadpan.
