What is the Guy Holding Cardboard Sign meme?
Guy Holding Cardboard Sign shows a young man with curly hair, round dark sunglasses and a black sweater standing on a busy city sidewalk against a red brick wall, holding a blank brown cardboard sign high above his head with both hands. People in beanies and scarves walk past around him, mostly ignoring him. The empty sign is the whole template: whatever is written on it becomes a public declaration, protest or hot take that this one man is bravely defending in front of strangers. It is used for unpopular opinions, unnecessary announcements and calm, deadpan statements that nobody asked for.
Also known as: Man Holding Sign, Protest Sign Guy, Blank Sign Meme.
How to use the Guy Holding Cardboard Sign meme
There is one text box, placed on the cardboard sign. Write the statement as if it were a protest slogan or an unpopular opinion, short enough to fit on a sign in a few lines. The default example is "pineapple belongs on pizza".
It works best for confident takes on small, divisive topics: food opinions, programming tabs versus spaces, movie rankings, sports debates, the right way to load a dishwasher. The calm face and the uninterested passers-by make it funny when the opinion is weirdly specific or slightly unhinged. Plain sentences in lowercase look the most like a handwritten sign.
