What is the Cat Looks Inside meme?
Cat Looks Inside is a fisheye close-up of a gray and white cat peering straight down into the camera, wide eyes and pink nose filling the frame as if the lens were at the bottom of a box. Above the photo is a pale strip with three green ">" arrows, the greentext style used on 4chan. The format is a tiny story of disappointment: "> buy wireless headphones", "> look inside", "> wires". The cat's blank, curious stare is the moment of discovering that something is not what it claimed to be, whether that is a product, a promise, a pull request or a job listing.
Origin: In 2022 an anonymous 4chan poster used the cat photo to illustrate a short greentext complaint about wireless devices having wires inside. Others kept the picture and swapped in their own "looks inside" discoveries.
Also known as: Looks Inside Cat, Cat Looking Down, Cat Staring Into Camera.
How to use the Cat Looks Inside meme
Write it as greentext. The first box is the setup, usually something promising ("> looks inside \"quick fix\" pr"). The second box is what was actually inside ("> 3000-line diff"). Starting each line with "> " keeps it in the 4chan style.
It works best when the label and the contents contradict each other: "healthy" snacks that are mostly sugar, "low maintenance" pets, "entry level" jobs that need five years of experience, games advertised as complete. Keep both lines short; the cat's stare does the rest.
