What is the But the Ad Said 3000 meme?
But the Ad Said 3000 is a frame of Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) in his homemade red spider shirt, standing in a gloomy office and staring at the wrestling promoter, who is counting out a small handful of bills in the foreground. The subtitle reads "The ad said 3000". Peter has just won the fight and is being paid a fraction of what he was promised, and his flat, betrayed stare sums up every bait-and-switch. People use it whenever a deal, prize, salary or feature turns out much smaller than advertised.
Origin: The scene is from Spider-Man (2002). Peter answers a flyer offering $3,000 to anyone who lasts three minutes against Bonesaw McGraw, beats him in two, and the promoter hands him only $100 on that technicality. Peter's indignant line became a widely used caption frame.
Also known as: The Ad Said 3000, Bonesaw 3000, Spider-Man 3000 Dollars.
How to use the But the Ad Said 3000 meme
Only the top of the image takes text. Write the disappointing reality that the person is being given, as if the promoter is saying it. The built-in subtitle "The ad said 3000" is the punchline, so you are setting up the gap between the offer and what actually showed up.
It fits job offers, game preorder bonuses, food that looks smaller than the menu photo, "unlimited" data plans, and group-project partners who promised to help. Phrase the top line as the letdown, short and specific.
