What is the You Were the Chosen One! meme?
You Were the Chosen One shows Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, on the volcanic planet Mustafar, his face streaked with soot and sweat, shouting through tears with lava glowing behind him. He is screaming at the apprentice he trained and believed in, who has just turned to the dark side. The meme uses that heartbroken outburst for anything that was supposed to be great and turned out to be a letdown: a hyped game launch, a star player who switched teams, a gadget that broke the first week.
Origin: The scene is the climax of Revenge of the Sith, the third Star Wars prequel from 2005, when Obi-Wan defeats Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar and cries out that Anakin was meant to destroy the Sith, not join them.
Also known as: Obi-Wan Chosen One, You Were Supposed to Destroy the Sith, Obi-Wan Mustafar.
How to use the You Were the Chosen One! meme
The top box names what was supposed to save the day, often in the form of a direct address. The bottom box carries Obi-Wan's line, "you were the chosen one!", or a variation that spells out the betrayal ("you were supposed to...").
It lands when the disappointment is genuine and the promise was big: a remake that ruined the original, a printer that only works on weekends, a tool that was meant to make things easier and doubled the work. The melodrama of the shot makes even small letdowns feel tragic.
