What is the Absolute Cinema meme?
Absolute Cinema is a black-and-white photo of director Martin Scorsese with both hands raised beside his head, palms out, eyes closed in reverent satisfaction, as if presenting a masterpiece. Paired with the words "absolute cinema", it declares that something has reached the level of great filmmaking. People use it for real art, but mostly for ordinary moments that feel unexpectedly dramatic: a last-second goal, a perfectly timed reply, a plot twist in the group chat, a cat knocking a glass off the table on cue.
Origin: The photo of Scorsese comes from a 2020 New York Times portrait session. Years later it was recaptioned as "absolute cinema" and became a widespread reaction image around 2024.
Also known as: Absolute Cinema Scorsese, Martin Scorsese Hands, This Is Cinema, Kino, Absolute Cinema Guy.
How to use the Absolute Cinema meme
The top box sets up the scene being praised, usually a short description of an event or a clip. The bottom box is the verdict, almost always "absolute cinema".
The gap between the grand gesture and a small event is the joke, so keep the setup mundane or very specific: a sports comeback, two coworkers arguing in a meeting, the boss fight music kicking in, the toast landing butter side up. Using it for something that really is excellent works too, as plain enthusiastic praise.
