What is the Bateman Walking meme?
Bateman Walking is a GIF from American Psycho of Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman striding into his office in a sharp suit and red tie, headphones on, staring straight ahead with a cold, blank expression. It is shorthand for unbothered confidence and slightly unhinged composure: walking in like you own the place, or acting completely calm after doing something ridiculous.
Origin: American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron, premiered in the United States in April 2000. Edits of the walking scene set to different songs turned Bateman into a symbol of the stone-faced "sigma" archetype online.
Also known as: Patrick Bateman Walking, American Psycho Walking, Bateman Headphones.
How to use the Bateman Walking meme
Top box: the situation you are walking away from or into. Bottom box: the detail that makes the confidence absurd.
It works best when the swagger is undeserved: leaving an exam after writing only your name, walking into a meeting you did not prepare for, heading back to class after a bad haircut. Keep the tone deadpan to match his stare.
