What is the Running Away Balloon meme?
Running Away Balloon is a simply drawn comic split into two panels. In the top panel a smiling white figure stretches both arms toward a big yellow balloon, clearly about to grab it. In the bottom panel a pink blob creature has wrapped its arms around the figure's waist from behind and is holding it back; the figure is still reaching and still smiling, but now there is a nervous sweat drop on its head. The balloon is the thing you want, and the pink creature is whatever stops you from getting it: a bad habit, a fear, a bill, your own brain.
Origin: The comic was drawn by the webcomic artist Superlmer and posted to Facebook in 2017. Blank versions spread soon after as a labeling template.
Also known as: Pink Guy Holding Back, Out of Reach Balloon.
How to use the Running Away Balloon meme
There are three labels. The first goes on the yellow balloon in the top panel and names the goal. The second goes on the balloon in the bottom panel, and is usually the same word repeated so the reader sees the goal hasn't changed. The third goes on the pink creature and names the thing dragging you away from it.
The punchline is always the pink label, so make it honest and a little self-deprecating. It hits hardest when the obstacle is yourself (procrastination, anxiety, spending habits) rather than an outside force, because the white figure is so cheerfully unaware of its own sabotage.
