What is the Bike Fall meme?
Bike Fall is a three-panel comic of a young man riding a bicycle down a path. In the first panel he is cruising along holding a stick, in the second he deliberately jams the stick into his own front wheel, and in the third he is lying on the grass clutching his ribs while the bike lies wrecked beside him. The meme uses it for self-sabotage: people (or companies, or teams) who cause their own problems and then act surprised or blame someone else.
Origin: The comic, called "Baton Roue", meaning wheel stick in French, was drawn by French artist Corentin Penloup and posted on his blog in 2011. Edits that label the rider, the stick and the crash later turned it into a widely shared template.
Also known as: Baton Roue, Stick in Bike Wheel, Bicycle Stick Meme, Bike Stick Fall.
How to use the Bike Fall meme
There are three boxes, one per panel. The first labels the rider: who is about to self-sabotage. The second labels the stick: the bad decision they make. The third is the rider on the ground, usually complaining or blaming someone else for the crash.
The funniest captions make the third panel completely oblivious, so the person who jammed in the stick is outraged by the result. Procrastination, skipping sleep, ignoring warnings and pushing without testing are all classic examples.
