What is the Laughing Leo meme?
Laughing Leo shows Leonardo DiCaprio as plantation owner Calvin Candie in Django Unchained (2012), leaning back at a dinner table in a fine suit with a white carnation, a small glass of drink raised in one hand and his face scrunched into a smug, mocking laugh. It is the reaction for laughing at someone's naive statement or obvious bad decision, the face you make when someone says a project will be finished by Friday. The drink in his hand also makes it a popular base for edits that swap in other beverages.
Origin: The frame is from Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012). It circulated as an edited image from 2017, often with an energy drink pasted into his hand, and became a widely used reaction image around 2020.
Also known as: Leonardo DiCaprio Laughing, Calvin Candie Laughing, Leo Django Laugh.
How to use the Laughing Leo meme
The top box is the setup, usually "when they say" or "me when". The bottom box is the naive or delusional statement Leo is laughing at, often in quotes. Example: "when they say" / "'it should be a quick fix'".
It works best for claims everybody knows are wrong: "it's only a 5 minute walk", "the update won't take long", "we'll win the league this year", "I'll just watch one episode". Keep the quoted line short so the smirk lands in one glance.
