What is the Phoebe Teaching Joey meme?
Phoebe Teaching Joey is an eight-panel grid from Friends. On the left, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) patiently says a phrase one chunk at a time; on the right, Joey (Matt LeBlanc) repeats each chunk with a strained, concentrating face. In the final row Phoebe says the whole sentence with an encouraging smile, and Joey, now beaming and confident, blurts out something completely different. The meme mocks anyone who nods along to every step of an explanation and still arrives at the wrong answer, or who hears exactly what they want to hear.
Origin: The scene is from the season 10 Friends episode "The One Where Joey Speaks French" (2004), in which Phoebe tries to coach Joey through French lines for an audition and his attempts come out as gibberish.
Also known as: Phoebe and Joey, Joey Repeats Phoebe, Friends Joey French, Joey Learning French.
How to use the Phoebe Teaching Joey meme
Boxes go left then right, row by row. Boxes 1, 3 and 5 are Phoebe's chunks and boxes 2, 4 and 6 are Joey repeating them exactly. Box 7 is Phoebe's full sentence, and box 8 is Joey's confident but wrong version.
The punchline works best when Joey's version is the opposite of the advice, or the tempting thing someone actually wanted to do. Break the phrase into three short pieces so the repetition reads quickly, and make box 8 sound like a natural mistake.
