What is the Brain Before Sleep meme?
Brain Before Sleep is a four-panel comic about the brain refusing to let you rest. In the first panel a pink cartoon brain with big round eyes says something; in the second a girl lies in bed, eyes closed, trying to drift off; in the third the brain pipes up again; and in the last panel she is lying in the dark with her eyes wide open, completely awake. The comic nails the experience of an intrusive thought arriving at the worst possible time: an embarrassing moment from years ago, a random question, or a worry you cannot do anything about at 3 a.m.
Also known as: Brain at 3 a.m., Brain Won't Let Me Sleep, Are You Awake Brain.
How to use the Brain Before Sleep meme
This template has three caption boxes. Box one is the brain's opening line (often an innocent question, or “you awake?”). Box two is your reply as the sleeper (“yes, I'm trying to sleep”). Box three is the brain's follow-up, which should be the intrusive thought that ruins the night. The last panel, with the wide-eyed stare, is the punchline and stays uncaptioned.
The best captions keep the first lines short and make the third oddly specific: a cringe moment from school, a bug you never fixed, a philosophical question nobody needs answered at 3 a.m.
