What is the Brace Yourselves, X Is Coming meme?
Brace Yourselves shows Sean Bean as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, wrapped in a heavy fur cloak, both hands resting on the pommel of his sword and his face set in a grim, far-off frown against a plain white background. He looks like a man who has seen the storm on the horizon and already knows nobody will listen. The meme borrows that solemn warning tone for something trivial but predictable: a wave of annoying posts, a season of seasonal complaints, a flood of emails after a product launch. The comedy comes from treating a small, inevitable nuisance like an approaching army.
Origin: "Winter is coming" is the motto of House Stark, both in George R. R. Martin's novels and in HBO's Game of Thrones adaptation, which premiered in 2011. Ned Stark repeats the warning in the first season, and this promotional photo of him became the base for the "Brace yourselves, X is coming" snowclone soon after the show began.
Also known as: Brace Yourselves, Winter Is Coming, Imminent Ned, Winter Is Coming, Ned Stark Brace Yourselves.
How to use the Brace Yourselves, X Is Coming meme
The top box almost always reads "brace yourselves". The bottom box names the thing that is about to arrive in bulk, in the form "X is coming" or "the X are coming", where X is something everyone can see on the calendar.
It works best for predictable floods: holiday ads in October, hot takes after a finale, merge conflicts after a big refactor, relatives asking about your love life. Keep the bottom line to a few words so it reads like a proclamation, and pick something seasonal or recurring so the reader groans in recognition.
