What is the What's in the box!? meme?
What's in the Box!? is a close-up of Brad Pitt as Detective David Mills at the climax of Se7en, his face bruised and bandaged, eyes wet and wide, mouth open in pure anguish under a hazy desert sky. Mills is screaming because he senses something unbearable is in the box, and the line has become shorthand for frantic, dread-filled curiosity. The meme keeps the desperate face and swaps the box for anything whose contents you need to know right now: a mystery package, an unopened email, a loot crate, the leftovers in the fridge.
Origin: The scene is the ending of Se7en, David Fincher's 1995 crime thriller starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, in which a delivery van brings a box out to the detectives in the desert.
Also known as: What's in the Box, Se7en Box, Brad Pitt What's in the Box.
How to use the What's in the box!? meme
The top box describes the setup: who has the mystery item, or what you just noticed ("mom comes home with a shopping bag", "a package with my name on it"). The bottom box is Mills's scream, usually "what's in the box!?" or a variation like "what's in the bag!?". The top can stay empty if the image is a reply.
It fits anything sealed or hidden: deliveries, surprise gifts, loot boxes, secret Santa, unopened test results, a coworker's suspicious lunch container. Over-the-top desperation about trivial contents is where the humor comes from.
