Please Sir, May I Have Some More shows a small, scruffy blond boy in a rough brown workhouse tunic holding out an empty metal bowl with both hands, a spoon resting in it, while rows of other boys sit at long tables behind him. His face is timid and pleading. It is the famous scene from Oliver Twist where the starving orphan dares to ask for a second helping of gruel and causes an uproar. As a meme it captions a nervous, humble request for a little more of something you have clearly been rationed: memory, budget, time, sleep or attention.
Origin: The scene comes from Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, first published as a serial in 1837 to 1839, where Oliver asks the workhouse master "Please, sir, I want some more." The image is a still from one of the many screen adaptations; the meme usually softens the line to "may I have some more".
