What is the There Is No War in Ba Sing Se meme?
This Avatar template shows Joo Dee, the relentlessly cheerful guide from Avatar: The Last Airbender, grinning wide on a balcony above the walled Earth Kingdom capital. Her smile is fixed and a little too bright. In the show, the city's secret police hide the war raging outside the walls, and anyone who mentions it is quietly taken away and brainwashed, so citizens repeat that there is no war with a frozen smile. The line has become shorthand for official denial: an organization insisting nothing is wrong while everyone can see the problem.
Origin: Joo Dee and the phrase appear in the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender (Nickelodeon), in the Ba Sing Se episodes that aired in 2006, where the Dai Li agents enforce the city's cover-up.
Also known as: Joo Dee, No War in Ba Sing Se.
How to use the There Is No War in Ba Sing Se meme
Split the sentence across the two boxes: the top box says "there is no ___" with your problem in the blank, and the bottom box finishes with "in ba sing se" or swaps the city for your workplace, game or community.
It fits any situation where someone in charge is pretending a known problem does not exist: tech debt, a game's balance issues, layoffs that are "not happening", a broken office coffee machine, the school wifi. Joo Dee's smile makes the denial feel creepy and funny at once.
