What is the Be Like Bill meme?
Be Like Bill is a plain white square with a smiling stick figure in a gray knit beanie with a red pom-pom standing on the right, leaving the left side free for text. Every caption follows the same tiny parable: "This is Bill. Bill does something sensible. Bill is smart. Be like Bill." Bill always avoids the annoying behavior the poster is complaining about, such as oversharing, vague-posting or replying without reading. The format sounds cheerful and childlike, which makes the passive-aggressive lecture underneath obvious, and that tone is why it is used both sincerely and ironically.
Origin: The stick-figure Bill started appearing on forums and Reddit in late 2015, and by early 2016 it was everywhere on Facebook, where a generator site let anyone make their own Bill with their name. Its earliest creator is not known.
Also known as: This Is Bill, Bill Is Smart.
How to use the Be Like Bill meme
There is one text box, and it holds the whole four-line parable. Line one: "This is Bill." Line two: what Bill does or refuses to do. Line three: "Bill is smart." Line four: "Be like Bill." Line breaks keep it readable next to the drawing.
The middle line carries the joke, so make it a precise, recognizable habit ("Bill mutes the group chat during vacation"). You can also flip it into irony by having Bill do something absurd and still calling him smart, which parodies the preachy tone of the original.
