What is the Socially Awesome Awkward Penguin meme?
Socially Awesome Awkward Penguin is the split-panel version of the Adélie penguin advice animals. The top half has the red sunburst background of Socially Awesome Penguin, where the bird is cool and charismatic; the bottom half switches to the blue background of Socially Awkward Penguin, where it shuffles along in shame. The image tells a two-part story that starts like a win and ends in embarrassment, like landing a dream job and then spilling coffee on the boss on day one.
Origin: It combines two older penguin macros: Socially Awkward Penguin, a blue-background Adélie penguin that narrates clumsy moments, and its red-background opposite, Socially Awesome Penguin. Mixing the two halves became its own format during the advice animal era of the early 2010s.
Also known as: Awesome Awkward Penguin, Red Blue Penguin.
How to use the Socially Awesome Awkward Penguin meme
The top box over the red half describes the confident, impressive start. The bottom box over the blue half describes how it falls apart. Good captions read like a tiny story with a twist: "first day at new job" / "spill coffee on bossman".
The stronger the first line, the harder the fall in the second. Think of a great joke followed by an accidental snort, a perfect date that ends with waving at someone who wasn't waving at you, or winning a match and then tripping on the way to celebrate.
