What is the Coffin Dance (Astronomia) meme?
Coffin Dance shows a crew of Ghanaian pallbearers in black tailcoats, white gloves and tall hats, dancing in step on a dusty road while carrying a white casket on their shoulders. Online, the dancers became a sort of grim reaper with rhythm: whenever someone makes a choice that is obviously going to end badly, the dancing coffin arrives to carry them off. The clip is almost always paired with the bouncy EDM track "Astronomia", so even the still frame makes people hear the song.
Origin: Dancing pallbearer groups in Ghana offer choreographed funeral processions as a celebration of life, and Benjamin Aidoo's team was featured by the BBC in 2017. Spliced with "Astronomia" by Vicetone and Tony Igy, their footage exploded on TikTok and YouTube in early 2020 as the ending for fail videos.
Also known as: Coffin Dance, Dancing Pallbearers, Astronomia, Ghana Funeral Dance.
How to use the Coffin Dance (Astronomia) meme
Use the top box for the risky decision and the bottom box for the detail that makes it fatal, or leave the bottom as a short tag. The image is the consequence, so the caption should describe the moment just before disaster rather than the disaster itself.
Classic setups: deploying on Friday, telling your mom "I don't care", skipping the tutorial in a soulslike, answering "what's the worst that could happen". The punchline is funnier when the doom is completely predictable and the person does it anyway.
