What is the Deepfake Tobey Maguire meme?
Deepfake Tobey Maguire is a blurry, washed-out still of a face crudely swapped onto a Spider-Man suit, so that the result looks like Tobey Maguire if he had been rendered through a smudged lens. The image came from a fake leak of Spider-Man: No Way Home made before the film came out, when fans were desperate for proof that the older Spider-Men would return. Today it is the reaction for any unconvincing evidence, sketchy leak or obviously faked proof, and for anything that is technically what you asked for but at disappointingly low quality.
Origin: A fake No Way Home leak using a deepfake of Maguire's face spread on Twitter in October 2021, ahead of the film's December 2021 release. The frozen frame became a popular reaction image as the premiere neared.
Also known as: Deepfake Tobey, Fake Leak Tobey Maguire, No Way Home Fake Leak.
How to use the Deepfake Tobey Maguire meme
The top box usually holds a claim or a rumor, and the bottom box gives the shaky proof: "source: trust me", "leaked footage", "here's the evidence". The deepfake face then shows exactly how trustworthy the evidence is.
It also works as "what I ordered vs. what I got" style humor: name the thing you expected, then present the blurry imitation. Leaks, rumors, knockoff products and suspicious screenshots are its natural targets.
