What is the First Try! meme?
First Try! is a still from The Lego Movie (2014) with two minifigures in a dim blue room: LEGO Batman on the left, eyes narrowed and teeth gritted in a skeptical scowl, and Benny, the 1980s blue spaceman, on the right with his huge cheerful open-mouthed smile. The contrast between Batman's grim disbelief and Benny's pure delight is the joke: something worked on the very first attempt, and one person is thrilled while the other cannot believe it. The caption is usually Benny's triumphant shout of "first try!", used both sincerely and sarcastically.
Also known as: First Try Meme, Lego Batman and Benny, Benny First Try.
How to use the First Try! meme
The bottom box is the punchline, almost always "first try!" or a variation. The top box sets up what supposedly worked on the first attempt. Leave it empty for a pure reaction image, or name something that never works the first time ("plugging in a usb", "code compiling").
It lands best when the success is suspicious or the audience knows it took fifty attempts, so the sarcastic reading kicks in. Coding, parallel parking, speedruns, assembly instructions and passing a driving test all fit.
