What is the Futurama Fry meme?
Futurama Fry shows Philip J. Fry in his red jacket, eyes narrowed to suspicious slits and mouth flat, glancing sideways against a blue-grey background. The squint captures that moment of trying to figure out what is really going on when two explanations seem equally likely. As a meme it almost always follows the "not sure if X / or just Y" structure, voicing an internal debate: is this person being clever or dumb, is this a compliment or an insult, is the game broken or am I bad at it. The comedy is in the indecision, with neither answer being flattering.
Origin: The squint comes from the Futurama episode "The Lesser of Two Evils" (season 2, 2000). The still became a staple image macro on Reddit and meme sites around 2011, almost always with the "not sure if" caption.
Also known as: Not Sure If, Squinting Fry, Can't Tell If.
How to use the Futurama Fry meme
The top box opens with "not sure if" plus the first possibility. The bottom box finishes with "or" plus the second possibility, often "or just" something less flattering.
The best captions offer two explanations that are both plausible and funny, so the reader shares Fry's squint. It suits ambiguous texts, sarcasm, buggy software, game mechanics and anything that could be genius or incompetence.
