What is the Happy Dolphin Rainbow meme?
Happy Dolphin Rainbow is an extremely bright fantasy painting of dolphins leaping out of a sparkling sea under a full rainbow, with hot air balloons drifting across a blue sky, glittering lens flares, a heart traced in spray and a coral reef full of clownfish and tropical fish below the waterline. It looks like a 1990s screensaver or a jigsaw puzzle box. Meme makers use it as the visual equivalent of pure, uncontained joy, either sincerely for a small win or ironically for something that is only barely good news.
Origin: The picture is a kitsch fantasy illustration of the kind sold as wallpapers and puzzles. Who painted it and where it was first used as a meme are not reliably known.
Also known as: Dolphins Under a Rainbow, Rainbow Dolphin Wallpaper.
How to use the Happy Dolphin Rainbow meme
Use the top box for the setup ("when...") and the bottom box for the happy moment. The image is so overloaded with sparkle that the caption should describe something small and ordinary, which makes the reaction feel hilariously excessive.
Tiny workplace wins, a canceled meeting, a compiling build, a long-awaited delivery and finding money in an old jacket all fit. For an ironic version, describe a win that is clearly sad, like getting two hours of sleep instead of one.
