What is the Inigo Montoya meme?
This template shows Inigo Montoya, the Spanish swordsman from The Princess Bride, looking at someone with calm, polite skepticism. His famous correction, telling a man that a word he keeps repeating probably doesn't mean what he believes, is the internet's standard reply to anyone who misuses a term with total confidence. Online it gets pointed at words like literally, ironic, gaslighting, theory, organic and decimate, and at marketing copy that stretches a word past its meaning. The charm is how mild the correction is: Inigo isn't angry, just quietly certain you have it wrong.
Origin: Mandy Patinkin plays Inigo in Rob Reiner's 1987 film The Princess Bride. He says the line to Vizzini, the scheming boss who shouts "Inconceivable!" every time something he declared impossible happens anyway.
Also known as: You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means, Inigo Montoya Meme, Princess Bride Meme.
How to use the Inigo Montoya meme
The classic layout splits the quote: the "you keep using that word" half goes on top and the "I do not think it means..." half fills the bottom. To make it your own, name the misused word in the top box ("you keep saying 'agile'") and leave the familiar second half alone, or bend it for a pun.
It fits pedantic corrections, buzzword-heavy meetings, clickbait headlines and debates where someone uses a technical term loosely. The more confidently the word is being abused, the better Inigo's restraint plays against it.
