What is the Monkey Puppet meme?
Monkey Puppet shows two nearly identical frames of a red-haired monkey puppet in a teal turtleneck. In the first its eyes glance sideways toward the camera; in the second they dart away again, as if it has been caught noticing something it would rather not be involved in. The awkward side-eye is the whole joke. It captures that instant of guilt or discomfort when a conversation suddenly turns to you, or when you realize you are the person being described. The blurry, low-quality look of the image only makes the silent panic funnier.
Origin: The puppet is Kenta, a character from the long-running Japanese children's show Ōkiku Naru Ko. The two-frame side-eye was put together for the meme around 2016 rather than being a single scene from the show.
Also known as: Awkward Look Monkey Puppet, Side Eye Monkey, Monkey Puppet Meme, Monkey Looking Away.
How to use the Monkey Puppet meme
The top box sits in the white space above the frames and holds the whole setup: a statement that quietly implicates you or someone in the room (“when the teacher asks who hasn't turned in the homework”). The bottom box is optional; leave it empty or add a tiny follow-up so the puppet's glance stays the punchline.
The best captions describe a moment of being called out without being named. Work, school, group chats and gaming lobbies all have plenty of those.
