What is the Stop Trying to Make Fetch Happen meme?
Stop Trying to Make Fetch Happen uses Rachel McAdams as Regina George in Mean Girls (2004), here in a red and white Santa hat, looking down with a cold, half-annoyed expression and lips slightly parted as she delivers a put-down. The line comes from Regina shutting down her friend Gretchen, who keeps saying "fetch" as slang for cool. As a meme it dismisses anything someone is pushing on everyone else that clearly is not catching on: a bad nickname, a forced trend, a product feature nobody asked for or a slang term only one person uses.
Origin: In Mean Girls (2004), Regina George tells Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert) "Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen. It's not going to happen." The image used here is a still of Regina from the film's holiday talent show scene.
Also known as: Regina George Fetch, Mean Girls Fetch, It's Not Going to Happen.
How to use the Stop Trying to Make Fetch Happen meme
Follow the fixed pattern: the top box is "stop trying to make ___ happen" with the unwanted trend in the blank, and the bottom box is "it's not going to happen" or a sharper variation.
It fits anything forced: a company renaming a product, a friend's homemade nickname, a dead social network, a game mode that nobody plays, a manager's new buzzword. Regina's icy tone works best when the target is something trying hard to be cool.
