What is the This is Bull, Shark meme?
This is Bull, Shark is a photo of a small grey shark being held up by a hairy forearm on a sunny beach, its pale green eye seeming to look straight at the camera with a resigned, unimpressed expression. The sea and breaking waves fill the background. The whole meme rests on a pun: a bull shark shares its name with "bull", as in nonsense, so the image says "this is bull" without saying it. Captions treat the shark as a sarcastic narrator who keeps getting caught or keeps calling out obvious lies, giving a mild, family-friendly way to say something is BS.
Origin: The photo and its pun were shared on Reddit's r/funny around 2015, where the caption turned an ordinary catch-and-release shark picture into a reaction image.
Also known as: This is Bull Shark, Bull Shark Pun, Shark Meme, This Is BS Shark.
How to use the This is Bull, Shark meme
The top box is the setup: the claim, excuse or situation being called out, or a sarcastic remark from the shark. The bottom box delivers the reaction, often building toward the pun, like "this is bull, shark", or a deadpan line about being caught again.
It lands when the shark's flat face matches a dry, sarcastic tone. Use it for obvious lies, broken promises, unfair rules and moments when you have been caught out yet again.
