What is the Tobey Maguire Face meme?
This Tobey Maguire template is a still from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films: Peter Parker walks down a busy New York street next to Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), who leans in toward the camera mid-sentence with a big smile. Peter, in a dark jacket, looks down and slightly away with a stiff, uncomfortable expression, as if he is trying very hard not to react. The contrast between her chatty enthusiasm and his frozen, swallowed panic is what people caption: it reads as the face you make when someone casually says something alarming and you have to keep walking.
Also known as: Awkward Peter Parker, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Walking.
How to use the Tobey Maguire Face meme
The top box sets up the moment and the bottom box finishes it, usually something like "when someone says ___" split across both lines. The best captions describe news delivered casually that the listener has a strong private reaction to, so Mary Jane plays the oblivious speaker and Peter plays you.
Work disasters announced in passing, spoilers dropped mid-conversation and awkward social revelations all fit. Keep the setup ordinary and let the bottom line carry the bad news.
