What is the What Are Ya Gonna Do? meme?
What Are Ya Gonna Do? shows Maurice, the hairy, horned Hormone Monster from the Netflix cartoon Big Mouth, winking with one eye, tongue lolling over a goofy grin, and shrugging with an upturned hand. His pendant whistle hangs from his neck. The pose says "oh well" in the most shameless way possible: something has gone wrong, and he's accepted it with a wink rather than any regret. Captions use it to shrug off a bad situation that can't be fixed.
Origin: Maurice is one of the Hormone Monsters on Big Mouth, the animated Netflix series that premiered in 2017, voiced by co-creator Nick Kroll.
Also known as: Whatcha Gonna Do, Maurice Shrug, Big Mouth Hormone Monster.
How to use the What Are Ya Gonna Do? meme
The top box describes the unfortunate situation, and the bottom box is the shrug: "what are ya gonna do?" or a casual "yeah...". The default splits it as "yeah..." on top and "what are ya gonna do?" below, which works as a reply to someone else's post.
It fits lighthearted shrugs about things you've chosen not to fix: ordering takeout again, losing to the same boss, a messy room, impulse purchases, missing the gym. The shameless wink is the point, so the caption should sound resigned rather than upset.
