What is the X all the Y meme?
X All the Y is a crude cartoon from Hyperbole and a Half: a stick figure in a pink shirt, with a tuft of blond hair and a huge open mouth, thrusts one fist in the air while gripping a broom in the other hand, all against a yellow starburst. In the original comic the character makes a burst of enthusiasm to clean everything, the triumphant "CLEAN ALL THE THINGS!" before the energy collapses. As a meme the pose became the universal sign for wild, overreaching ambition, captioned "[verb] ALL THE [noun]!" The comedy comes from manic over-commitment: wanting to do everything, immediately, with no plan and no awareness of how it ends.
Origin: The drawing is by Allie Brosh, from a 2010 Hyperbole and a Half post about failing to be a responsible adult. The "all the things" caption became one of the biggest snowclones of the early 2010s.
Also known as: All the Things, Clean All the Things, Hyperbole and a Half.
How to use the X all the Y meme
The top box usually holds the full "X ALL THE Y!" exclamation, and the bottom box is optional: leave it empty, or add a reality check that deflates the enthusiasm. Alternatively, split the phrase: verb on top, "ALL THE ___!" below.
Pick something you are being absurdly greedy or overconfident about: refactoring every file, buying every game on sale, adopting every dog. The two-panel letdown version (top: the battle cry, bottom: what actually happened) is a nice twist on the original comic's arc.
