What is the Bad Luck Brian meme?
Bad Luck Brian is a school yearbook portrait of a teenage boy with blond hair, a plaid sweater vest, braces and a wide, awkward grin. Everything about the photo feels slightly off, which made it the perfect face for a character to whom only terrible things happen. The captions tell tiny tragic stories: he tries something normal and it backfires in the most humiliating way possible. Part of the charm is that he always looks cheerful, so the doom in the caption contrasts with his hopeful expression.
Origin: The photo is the real yearbook picture of Kyle Craven. His friend Ian Davies posted it to Reddit in January 2012 with a caption about a driving test going wrong, and it became one of the best-known advice animals of that year.
Also known as: BLB, Unlucky Brian.
How to use the Bad Luck Brian meme
Use the classic advice animal setup and punchline. The top box is an ordinary, hopeful action in third person (“buys a lottery ticket”). The bottom box is the disastrous outcome (“wins, ticket goes through the wash”).
The best captions are short stories where the bad luck is perfectly targeted to the situation, almost poetic. Avoid real tragedy; keep it to embarrassing, unlucky, everyday disasters at school, at work, in games and in love.
