What is the Aragorn at the Black Gate meme?
Aragorn at the Black Gate is a two-panel still from Peter Jackson's Return of the King (2003), the final film in the trilogy. In the top panel Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) turns back to his companions with a calm, sad half-smile; in the bottom panel he charges alone toward the vast army of Mordor with his sword raised. Before the charge he quietly says "For Frodo." The meme uses that moment for any hopeless, selfless or reckless charge into impossible odds in the name of someone or something, from a deadline to a friend in need.
Origin: The scene is the final battle of The Return of the King, where the remaining armies of the West march on the Black Gate to distract Sauron while Frodo reaches Mount Doom.
Also known as: For Frodo, Aragorn For Frodo, Aragorn Black Gate, Lord of the Rings Charge.
How to use the Aragorn at the Black Gate meme
The top box usually holds the line Aragorn says, in the form "for X". The bottom box can name the overwhelming enemy or the impossible task he is running into, or restate the cause for a punchier finish.
It works for heroic last stands in everyday life: one developer against a production outage, a student facing finals, the last defender against a counterattack, someone diving into a pile of laundry. The bigger the army and the smaller the cause, the funnier it gets.
