What is the Confused Math Lady meme?
Four close-ups show a blonde woman squinting and glancing around, deep in thought, while geometry and algebra formulas float around her: a cone with its volume formula, the quadratic formula, a trigonometry table and triangles. She is Brazilian actress Renata Sorrah as the villain Nazaré Tedesco. The overlay of maths turns her suspicious look into the universal face of trying to work something out and failing, so it is the reaction for confusing instructions, mental arithmetic, plot holes and anything that refuses to add up.
Origin: The footage comes from the Brazilian telenovela Senhora do Destino, broadcast on TV Globo in 2004. Versions with equations drawn over the character's face spread internationally under the name Confused Math Lady.
Also known as: Math Lady, Brazilian Woman Thinking, Nazaré Confusa.
How to use the Confused Math Lady meme
The top box sets up the person, usually "me", and the bottom box names what they are trying to figure out. The equations do the visual joke, so the caption should be a puzzle that has no business needing calculus.
Great topics are splitting a restaurant bill, timezone math for an online meeting, figuring out how old a character is, remembering why you walked into a room, game damage stats, or understanding a parking sign with five different rules.
