What is the Math Is Math meme?
Math Is Math is a frame from Pixar's Incredibles 2 showing Bob Parr, Mr. Incredible, hunched over the kitchen table at sunset with crumpled scrap paper around him, reading glasses in one hand and a finger jabbing at a page. He grits his teeth in a frustrated half-grin. In the film he is helping his son Dash with homework, discovers the school now teaches the subject a different way, and bursts out that they should never have changed it because math is math. The meme is for anyone furious that a familiar thing got redesigned for no reason.
Origin: The scene appeared in an Incredibles 2 trailer in early 2018 before the film reached theaters that June. Bob's outraged "math is math!" quickly became a template for complaining about pointless change.
Also known as: Mr. Incredible Math Is Math, Why Would They Change It.
How to use the Math Is Math meme
Top box is the indignant question, usually "why would they change ___?" Bottom box is Bob's answer in the form "X is X!" using the same thing. The repetition is the joke: an angry tautology that sounds like a winning argument.
Good targets are redesigns and updates people did not ask for: app layouts, sports rule tweaks, recipe changes at a favourite restaurant, new syntax. The shout should end with an exclamation mark.
