What is the Is Mayonnaise an Instrument? meme?
Is Mayonnaise an Instrument? shows Patrick Star holding a brass instrument and raising one hand, his mouth open mid-question, while Mrs. Puff, Sandy and other Bikini Bottom residents sit behind him in band practice looking puzzled. Patrick is completely sincere, which is the point. The meme uses his innocent question to ask something that sounds dumb but sparks a real debate, or to poke fun at a question that has a clear answer everyone except the asker already knows.
Origin: The line is from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Band Geeks" (2001). Squidward is rehearsing a marching band when Patrick raises his hand to ask it; Squidward replies that mayonnaise is not an instrument, and Patrick follows up by asking about horseradish.
Also known as: Patrick Mayonnaise, Mayonnaise Is Not an Instrument, Band Geeks Patrick.
How to use the Is Mayonnaise an Instrument? meme
The question is split over two boxes: the top box starts it ("is X") and the bottom box finishes it ("a Y?"). Together they read as Patrick's question.
It works for two kinds of jokes. One is a genuine debate question disguised as naive ("is a hot dog a sandwich?"). The other is a question so obviously wrong that asking it is the punchline. Topics where people argue endlessly over definitions, like programming, food categories or sports rules, are perfect.
