What is the Member Berries meme?
Member Berries shows a cluster of purple grapes from South Park, each with a soft, contented little face, one of them beaming with an open-mouthed smile. In the show they talk, and everything they say is a nostalgic “'member?” followed by some piece of old pop culture, delivered in a cozy, dreamy voice. The joke is about nostalgia as a drug: a pleasant, uncritical high from remembering things the way you wish they were. As a meme it is used to poke fun at people who only want reboots, remakes and the good old days, or to fondly recall something genuinely gone.
Origin: The berries were introduced in the season 20 premiere of South Park, “Member Berries,” in 2016, where Randy Marsh and others get hooked on them. The episode used them to satirize how nostalgia shaped politics and franchise reboots that year.
Also known as: 'Member Berries, Remember Berries, Oh I Member.
How to use the Member Berries meme
Write the caption the way the berries speak. The top box is just “'member” (or “'member when”), and the bottom box names the nostalgic thing as a question: “Star Wars?”, “dial-up internet?”, “when games came finished?”
The best captions are slightly pointed: something everyone misses, or something that was never as good as people pretend. Stack a second memory in the bottom line for a gentle escalation, such as “Chewbacca? Oh, I 'member.”
