What is the Doctor Manhattan: It Is 1985 meme?
This three-panel comic page shows Doctor Manhattan, the glowing blue superhuman from Watchmen, alone on the pink surface of Mars: a close-up of his serene face, a distant shot of him standing under the stars, then a wide shot of him sitting on a rock, utterly alone. Each panel has an empty pale-blue caption box. The meme copies the flat, present-tense narration of the comic to describe one small modern annoyance with cosmic weariness, so a broken printer or a group chat gets treated like the reason a god left Earth.
Origin: Watchmen was written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons for DC Comics in 1986 and 1987. Chapter IV, "Watchmaker", follows Doctor Manhattan on Mars as he narrates his life in detached present tense, and the line "I am tired of Earth. These people." from the story became a popular quote, helped by the 2009 film adaptation.
Also known as: I Am Tired of Earth, I Am Tired of Earth. These People., Doctor Manhattan Mars, It Is 1985.
How to use the Doctor Manhattan: It Is 1985 meme
Fill the three caption boxes in order like a short monologue. The first panel sets the time or scene in a deadpan way ("It is 2026."), the second states the trigger ("I open my inbox."), and the third, over the lonely wide shot, delivers the conclusion, usually "I am tired of Earth." or a twist on it.
Keep every caption short, declarative and emotionless: no exclamation marks, no slang. The joke is the gap between the godlike calm of the narration and how small the problem is. It works for work emails, social media, sports results, game patches and family gatherings.
