What is the Facepalm meme?
This facepalm is Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, sitting in his chair on the Enterprise bridge in his red and black uniform, his face buried in one hand. It is the most famous version of the facepalm, the universal gesture of exasperation when someone does something so dumb there is nothing left to say. Picard's calm, dignified reputation makes it funnier: if even the captain of a starship is reduced to hiding behind his hand, the mistake must be epic. It works as a pure reaction image or with a caption naming the blunder.
Origin: The shot is from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Déjà Q" (1990), played by Patrick Stewart. The facepalm itself is an old gesture, but this frame became the go-to facepalm reaction image on forums in the 2000s.
Also known as: Picard Facepalm, Captain Picard Facepalm, Face Palm.
How to use the Facepalm meme
The top box can name the blunder or stay empty, and the bottom box is the reaction, often a short exasperated line like "I can't even" or "why are we like this".
It fits any moment of collective or personal stupidity: someone replying-all to the whole company, a referee missing an obvious call, autocorrect fails, your own mistake discovered too late. The plainer the setup, the more the facepalm says.
