What is the First World Problems meme?
First World Problems is a close-up of a woman with dark hair, crying, eyes closed and one hand pressed to her forehead, a tear running down her cheek. The emotion is intense, almost cinematic, which is the point: the captions pair that real-looking grief with tiny inconveniences that only exist when life is comfortable. Slow wifi, a phone charger that is a bit too short, a coffee order with the wrong milk. The contrast between deep sorrow and a trivial complaint is the entire joke, and it doubles as gentle self-mockery about how spoiled everyday frustrations can sound.
Origin: “First world problems” was already a common tongue-in-cheek phrase for minor complaints before this stock photo of a crying woman became its advice animal image around 2011.
Also known as: FWP, First World Problems Lady, Crying Woman First World Problems.
How to use the First World Problems meme
The top box sets up the luxury situation (“my phone is at 100%”), and the bottom box adds the minor annoyance that ruins it (“but the charger is in the other room”). Write it in a dramatic, first-person voice as if it were a real tragedy.
It lands best when the problem is relatable and slightly embarrassing to admit: streaming, food delivery, smart devices, too many choices. The smaller the problem, the bigger the joke against her tearful face.
