What is the Confused Gandalf meme?
Confused Gandalf is a three-frame stack of Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey in a dark, cavernous passage, a glowing staff at his side. Over the frames he looks one way, then another, and in the final close-up his face settles into a lost, squinting frown under the wide brim of his hat. He is the wise wizard who is supposed to know the way, and he has no idea where he is. The meme uses that to express total unfamiliarity: coming back to old code, waking up in a strange place, or looking at a subject you supposedly studied.
Origin: The frames come from The Fellowship of the Ring, the 2001 first chapter of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, during the journey through the Mines of Moria, where Gandalf admits he has no memory of the place.
Also known as: I Have No Memory of This Place, Gandalf No Memory.
How to use the Confused Gandalf meme
The top box sets the scene and the bottom box is the reaction, usually Gandalf's own line "I have no memory of this place". You can leave the top box empty and let the image speak, or describe the situation: "opening my own code from six months ago".
It is best for moments where you should recognize something and don't: the exam topic you definitely attended a lecture on, your hometown after ten years, a game you returned to after a big update, your own handwriting. Keep the setup factual so the confusion does the punchline.
