What is the Flex Tape meme?
Flex Tape shows two shots from an infomercial. In the top one, spokesman Phil Swift stands next to a large clear water tank with a big hole in its side, water gushing out, while he grins in a black polo shirt in front of a giant Flex Tape banner. In the bottom one, his hand slaps a black patch of tape over the hole, water splashing around it. As a labeling meme, the leak is a serious problem and the tape is the quick, shallow fix someone slaps on it: restarting the server, a sticker over a cracked screen, apologizing without changing anything. The joke is the confidence of the cover-up.
Origin: The images come from a Flex Tape TV commercial by Swift Response, uploaded to YouTube in 2017 and famous for Phil Swift's loud, enthusiastic delivery, including sawing a boat in half and patching it.
Also known as: Phil Swift Flex Tape, Phil Swift Slaps On Flex Tape, That's a Lot of Damage.
How to use the Flex Tape meme
The top box labels the leak, the problem that is spilling everywhere. The bottom box labels the tape, the fix someone uses to hide it. The joke is strongest when the fix is clearly temporary or only cosmetic.
It suits tech workarounds, procrastination, relationships, politics in the abstract and school. You can also label it like a confession: the leak is "my real feelings" and the tape is "saying 'I'm fine'".
