What is the Good Guy Greg meme?
Good Guy Greg is a classic advice animal: a cheerful young man with a buzz cut and stubble, tilting his face toward the camera with a lopsided grin and what looks like a joint hanging from his lips. Despite the stoner look, the character is the friend everyone wishes they had. His captions describe small acts of decency, usually set up as a situation where you expect him to be annoying and then flipped into something kind. He was conceived as the opposite of Scumbag Steve, and the two were often posted side by side.
Origin: Good Guy Greg was one of the big advice animal characters of 2011, spreading on Reddit and meme generator sites. Where the photo was first posted is not reliably known.
Also known as: GGG, Good Guy Greg Joint.
How to use the Good Guy Greg meme
Use the top box for a setup that sounds like it could go badly, and the bottom box for the decent thing Greg does instead. The classic rhythm is "does something risky or lazy" on top and "turns out to be considerate" below, for example crashing on your couch and then making breakfast.
It works for any everyday kindness: a coworker covering your shift, a gamer passing the loot, a roommate who restocks the toilet paper. Keep it unironic for the classic version, or flip it for a darker joke where the good deed has an obvious catch.
