What is the Handsome Squidward meme?
Squidward Tentacles appears with a chiseled jaw, full lips, heavy-lidded eyes and smooth features, glowing against a burst of warm colours. This is Handsome Squidward, the impossibly attractive version of the usually lumpy, grumpy character. As a meme he represents a dramatic glow-up: something ordinary transformed into its most polished, confident form. Captions use him for code after formatting, a room after cleaning, a profile picture after filters, or yourself after one good night of sleep.
Origin: Handsome Squidward appears in "The Two Faces of Squidward", a 2007 SpongeBob SquarePants episode, in which an accident leaves Squidward's face reshaped into a handsome one that everyone in Bikini Bottom adores.
Also known as: Squidward Glow Up, Hot Squidward.
How to use the Handsome Squidward meme
The top box names the thing that got upgraded, and the bottom box gives the circumstance of the glow-up, often beginning with "after" or "with". The image is the "after" picture, so the caption should make clear what changed.
It is especially funny when the upgrade is tiny or superficial: wearing a new hoodie, getting a haircut, renaming variables, adding a filter, putting on sunglasses, or a car after a single wash. Self-deprecating versions where you only feel this handsome briefly also work well.
