What is the Epic Handshake meme?
Epic Handshake shows two huge, muscular forearms meeting in the middle of the frame in a thumb-locked grip, one in a white sleeve on the left, one in a red sleeve on the right, painted in soft pastel against a stormy grey background. It recreates the macho greeting between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers in Predator. Each arm is labeled with a group that normally disagrees, and the clasped hands are labeled with the one thing they both share, so the meme celebrates unexpected common ground.
Origin: The handshake is from the opening of the 1987 action film Predator, when Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) greets his old comrade Dillon (Carl Weathers) and the greeting turns into an arm wrestle. This painted version of the shot became the standard labeling template in the late 2010s.
Also known as: Predator Handshake, Dutch and Dillon Handshake, Arm Wrestle Handshake.
How to use the Epic Handshake meme
This template has three boxes. The first goes on the left arm, the second on the right arm, and the third over the gripped hands at the top. Label the arms with two groups that rarely agree, then put their shared opinion or habit on the hands.
The bigger the gap between the two sides, the better the joke: rival fan bases, cat people and dog people, frontend and backend developers, students and teachers. The middle label works best when it is very specific and slightly petty, like hating a particular app update or the same kind of meeting.
