What is the The Office: Congratulations meme?
The Office: Congratulations is an old-looking office photo from The Office (US): a much younger Michael Scott, with a mullet, a short-sleeved white shirt, a striped tie and a blue fanny pack, shakes hands with an older executive in a dark suit in front of a wall map and bookshelves. The executive smiles politely; Michael looks earnest and stiff, like it is the proudest moment of his life. The staged formality is what makes it funny. It turns into a mock award ceremony for an achievement that does not deserve one, handing out an official-looking "congratulations" for the bare minimum.
Also known as: The Office Congratulations, Michael Scott Congratulations, Young Michael Scott Handshake.
How to use the The Office: Congratulations meme
The top box describes the tiny accomplishment, often starting with "you" or "when you". The bottom box is the award itself, usually just "congratulations" or a fake honor like "employee of the month".
It lands best when the achievement is something adults are expected to do anyway: replying to an email, fixing your own bug, showing up on time, drinking water. You can also turn it on yourself, celebrating a low bar with the same solemn handshake.
