What is the Hipster Barista meme?
Hipster Barista is a photo of a young man with swept red-brown hair, thick-framed glasses and a beard, wearing a black v-neck and a dark knitted scarf indoors, arms crossed over heavily tattooed forearms, staring at the camera with mild contempt. He is standing in what looks like a café with a chalkboard behind him. The macro plays on the stereotype of the snobby coffee-shop barista: someone who looks down on your order, your taste and mainstream anything, yet is full of small hypocrisies. The joke usually comes from the second line exposing the gap between his attitude and his reality.
Origin: Hipster Barista emerged as an advice-animal macro in 2011 on Quickmeme and Reddit, riding the wave of hipster stereotype jokes from that era.
Also known as: Hipster Coffee Guy, Snobby Barista.
How to use the Hipster Barista meme
The top box describes something the barista does or believes, usually lofty or judgmental. The bottom box adds the hypocritical or petty twist.
The best captions undercut his snobbery: claiming to hate corporations while working for one, judging your milk choice, refusing to make the drink on the menu. It also stretches to any snobby niche, like vinyl collectors, craft beer fans and indie game purists.
